Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling
What is Automated Microneedling?
An electric skin needling device that looks like a pen uses tiny needles to create very fine micro tunnels in the skin. We use Dermapen that is a safer and more effective devise. Be aware of the cheaper Dermaroller versions that other professionals use and the Dermarollers you can purchase for at home use. (More detailed information is at the end on the difference between Automated Microneedling Vs Dermaroller.) This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which enhances the appearance of your skin. These tunnels also serve to allow better and quicker penetration of topical skin care products resulting in quicker and more effective skin rejuvenation. The best results of this treatment are obtained when it is combined with one of our skin care programs.
What conditions can be treated or improved with Microneedling?
* Mild acne scarring; any new or old scars
* Fine lines and wrinkles
* Loose, lax skin
* Skin textural irregularities and large pore size
* Stretch marks
* General skin textural irregularity
How does Microneedling work?
The pen slides along the skin, penetrating the upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 0.1mm to 2.5 mm to create numerous tiny tunnels. The procedure prompts the body to respond with the creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. In response to the stimulus, the skin plumps, thickens and is smoothed reducing the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles.
What does the procedure involve?
The skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied to lessen discomfort. For better results and more comfort, we use a collagen-stimulating product like hyaluronic acid or Apple stem cells during the procedure. The small, handheld, pen-like device has a sterile, disposable tip with 12 tiny needles. It pierces the skin in the area(s) to be treated. After the treatment, a soothing Stem Cell and hyaluronic serum is used to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.
What will I look like after the treatment?
Most people experience mild redness and/or slight swelling similar to a mild sunburn for 24-48 hours. There may be minimal pin-point bleeding and/or bruising. Within a week or two, you will notice that your skin is smoother and more radiant looking but the final effects won’t be seen until a few months later.
What is the down time after Microneedling treatment?
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pink that may last for 12 to 48 hours. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend a topical hyaluronic preparation after the procedure and skin protection with a broad-spectrum UV sunblock. The use of only mineral makeup is recommended after procedure. We have a great one we can recommend. You also get to take home a free Post Treatment Kit to help speed up the healing process.

Is Microneedling painful?
Prior to the treatment, numbing cream will be applied to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
How many treatments do I need and how often can Microneedling procedures be repeated?
Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks until you achieve the desired results. For overall rejuvenation, we recommend starting with 3 treatments with a minimum separation time of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments. For scar reduction, an average of 3 to 6 treatments are recommended. The number of treatments required will depend on how each individual responds to the treatments, age, the extent of the damage to your skin and your specific treatment goals. This will all be discussed at the initial consultation.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Microneedling can be used on all skin parts of the body (face, neck, décolleté, trunk arms, legs, etc). Most people will begin to see results after the very first treatment.
What should I avoid on my skin after treatment?
To ensure proper healing, we recommend not using any products containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), retinol or Retin-A for 2-3 days. We have found that the use of Retinols make your skin more sensitive. Therefore, we recommend that you to stop using all products that contains retinol at least 3 day to 7 days before treatment. Exposure to sun should also be avoided and a broad-spectrum UV sunblock should be used. You will be given specific instructions after the procedure.
What are the side effects and risks of the Microneedling procedure?
There are virtually no negative side effects other than mild redness and swelling after the procedure.
Am I a candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling can be safely performed on all skin types and all skin colors. As the epidermis and in particular pigment cells called melanocytes in the skin are left intact, there is minimal risk of pigment change or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Skin MicroNeedling can treat sensitive and fragile areas that are difficult to treat with other procedures. These areas include the eyes, the neck and the back of the hands.
However, this procedure is NOT suitable for patients who:
Have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last 3-6 months
Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions on the skin
Have had radiation treatment to the skin within the last year
Have any kind of current skin infection, condition or herpes simplex in the area(s) to be treated
Are pregnant or breast feeding
Have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing
How much does the treatment cost?
This is assessed at the initial consultation. A treatment plan is created for each patient and the cost is discussed at this time. This is based on each patient’s unique requirements and the goals that are desired. We have some general fees on our website. MicroNeedling may be combined with other treatments as a package to reduce the overall cost. One Dermapen service is $300 and a package of 3 it $750.
